In 2010 almost eighty years after the trunk road from Middlesbrough to Redcar was opened, it was announced that Corus, one of the oldest steel making plants on the road, was to be mothballed culminatinating in the redundancy of 1600 workers.

It was feared that the impact of this would have a devestating effect on a region which had already seen it's fair share of troubled times. As always the region rallied and began making it's voice heard. Within a year Corus was bought by Sahaviriya Steel Industries saving a total of 700 jobs at the plant.

Update to this project:

In 2015 the majority of the steelworks, including the Redcar blast furnace, Redcar and South Bank coke ovens and the BOS plant at Lackenby were permanently closed.
